In a quiet classroom Thursday morning, Logan Castille and Aiden Reed adjusted the angle of their spoon-and-popsicle stick catapult.
The middle school students flung cotton balls and marshmallows toward a basketball hoop-shaped bucket, shifting the rubber bands holding the pieces together when they missed their target.
Instead of lab coats, they wore shorts and basketball sneakers and covered their eyes with plastic safety goggles.
“You guys look good,” teacher Joy Schwartz said. “You look like scientists. You’re athletes and scientists.”
A few hours later, they faced off in a 3-on-3 game under the watchful eye of Michael Ryals. The former Ozen coach, who will join the West Brook staff this year, ran the afternoon basketball sessions at Beaumont ISD’s Swish Zone! camp, which combines science and math activities with sports.
